Gastric bands cause complications

An adjustable gastric band, commonly referred to as a lap band, is an inflatable silicone device placed around the top portion of the stomach in obese patients to help them reduce weight by lowering gastric compliance and appetite. Unlike weight loss surgeries which involve removing a part of stomach, gastric band can be implanted and removed via laparoscopic operation which needs shorter recovery and poses fewer risks. Therefore, despite limited effectiveness a large number of people who fail to lose their excessive overweight become interested in lap bands. According to a new report published in The Lancet, Dr. Adam Czapran and colleagues at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley found that malfunction of a lap band had led to severe respiratory and lung damage in a 49-year-old woman several years after the surgery.
